Fifteen different acts are coming to Hanmer Springs this weekend (27/28th February) to celebrate the inaugural RockGas Gospel Jazz and Blues Festival. Top international acts such as acclaimed Australian Jazz Pianist Adrian Ford, and the incredibly talented New Zealander Fiona Pears, will be mixing it with top rated bands from through out New Zealand, in cafes, bars and reserves for the whole weekend. You can be entertained from 10am on the Saturday, as you take your brunch at a local café, or from 11am while sitting in the Thermal Pools complex. After each act, you will have time to wander along to another venue to pick up another performance, depending on your whim, choosing perhaps to catch Jeff Bradley and Delta Swing with their Swing Jazz, or perhaps Chris Lee the master of the harmonica. Saturday evening in the grounds of the Queen Mary Hospital, sees an incredible line up of artists from 5pm, starting with Fiona Pears, and including blues singer song writer Phil Bennett-Eades, culminating with the soulful voice and incredible guitar playing talent of Paul Ubana Jones. In between we will be entertained by Hot Club Sandwich, getting a handle on bluegrass, country blues, jug band, pop-folk, vaudeville music, and jazz. All this for only $20 entry, and with food and beverage on site, it promises to be a wonderful picnic like atmosphere. Tickets can be brought at the gate or various venues around the village. It doesn’t stop there however, with Sunday offering even more high class entertainment. Starting on the Village Green at 10am, we will be entranced by the choral talents of the Christchurch City Chorus, followed by the talented Liz Nicole, the zany sounds of Eclectic Soul/No Banjo, and the zap of the choral group Jabulani. Gospel will be the theme with these groups, mixed with traditional Jazz and Blues. What a great way to spend your Sunday morning. If that’s not your style, then visit some of the other venues for more from the Jazz and Blues artists from Saturday, at the Thermal Pools and Spa complex, or one of the local cafes. Programs and souvenir Tote bags filled with goodies will be on sale throughout the weekend, so why not come on up to Hanmer Springs and have a laid back weekend. There’s still accommodation available, so bring the family and make a weekend of it. More details on www.hanmerevents.co.nz |
